After a long week of work and stress, there is no better way to unwind than a relaxing facial. While it is nice and dandy to lay down and do nothing while someone does all of the work, a professional facial can cost upwards of hundreds of dollars. Save the money and try an at-home facial. These can be accomplished with a few easy products that can be found at any Target. If you’re really that lazy, invite some friends over for a spa night and give each other facials. Here are some tools and tricks to accomplish the ultimate at-home facial:
Take the Day Off
Before you can get to any of the good stuff, you need to remove the makeup and dirt on your face. Use a makeup wipe to get off stubborn waterproof mascara and select your favorite cleanser to wash your face with. It is important to start with a blank canvas so that all of the yummy products you use after can properly soak into your face.
Open Up Those Pores
Clogged pores are a common skincare issue, so we need to combat this before moving on. Apply warm steam to your face for five to ten minutes. Pour a small pot of boiling water into a glass bowl, then hold your face above the bowl and let the steam rise onto your face. If you really want to trap the steam near your face, put a small towel over your head and around the bowl. The hot water will open up your pores and prepare your skin for the facial.
Exfoliation Nation
Now that your pores are ready, select your favorite exfoliating face product. The exfoliation will remove your dead skin and pull the dirt out of your pores. Now if that doesn’t sound satisfying, I don’t know what does. I recommend a physical exfoliator because it has fine particles that will cleanse your skin deeply. Additionally, rubbing the exfoliator into your face can be a stress-reliever.
Mask On Mask Off
This step is probably what comes to mind for most people when they think of a facial. Be careful when selecting a mask though, because the best smelling mask is not always the best for your skin type. It is important when buying a mask to look for one that is meant for your skin type and will help improve your skin concerns. When I do a face mask, I will usually use one for large pores and blackheads and sometime I will follow up with a moisturizing mask because the pore-extraction mask can be drying. Feel free to play into the stereotypical spa night and pop some cucumber slices over your eyes.
Moisturize
The final step is to moisturize your skin. Your skin may feel soft and supple from the mask but don’t be fooled, you still need to moisturize. Apply moisturizer to your face and neck, as well as an under eye cream. If you want the ultimate feeling of luxury, apply a face serum by patting it into the skin. There are a wide-variety of face serums available, and they are definitely worth the investment.
Now you can go to sleep and wake up with glowing skin for another week of work.
