How To Master Your Foundation

If I only have 10 minutes to put on makeup and I want to look somewhat put together, I will spend most of the time on my foundation. A good looking base is the key to any makeup look. I would rather spend my time blending out and perfecting my foundation than trying to produce an eyeshadow look. This may be a personal preference, but I believe a nice foundation base makes someone look like they spent more time on their makeup. This post is going to cover how to keep your foundation lasting all day, as well as the different types of foundation products that are available.

Prep and Prime

If you want your makeup to last through the night, you’re going to have to do more than just slap some foundation down. Start by applying a moisturizer and allow it to sink into the skin for five to 10 minutes. Next, apply a face primer starting with the center of your face and blending out toward the edges. Pro Tip: Check the ingredients of your products! If your foundation is silicon-based, use a silicon-based primer and if your foundation is water-based, pair with a water-based primer. The combination of the like-materials will work better together.

Pick Your Poison

When deciding what type of foundation to purchase, you should look at two things: your skin type + the amount of coverage you want. If you have oily-prone skin, you may want to opt for a mattifying foundation. If your skin is normal to dry, you can try a moisturizing foundation for a dewy finish. The next step is to decide what formula or, texture that you want to use.

  • Liquid (or cream) foundations often come in a bottle with a pump or twist cap and this formula works well with most skin types. Cream foundation is buildable, which means you can apply a thin layer and allow it to dry, then apply another layer and continue until you have achieved your desired coverage.

  • Tinted moisturizer is similar to a cream foundation, except it is more sheer, meaning it provides less coverage. A tinted moisturizer is great for the summer when you may want to wear less makeup, plus it often has spf which makes this product a win-win.

  • Stick foundation is perfect for the girl-on-the-go. All you have to do is draw a few lines on your face and blend out the product, and you’re good to go! This formula works well on normal to oily skin types. If you have dry skin and want to try a stick foundation, just be sure to apply some moisturizer beforehand so the foundation doesn’t clump around your dry patches.

  • Powder (or compact) foundation is very similar to a stick foundation in that it provides you with quick and natural looking coverage. Girls-on-the-go, no more saying you don’t have time for foundation because this post has already given you two options!

  • Mineral foundation is a fantastic option for those with sensitive skin or prefer natural, organic makeup. This formula is made from primarily from minerals in nature and it won’t upset sensitive or allergy-prone skin types.

Whoever said there was one way to makeup for everyone was WRONG. Every skin-type and person is different and you deserve the freedom to choose what you want to look like each day. Have fun shopping and good luck!
