The idea of pointed any sharp object toward your eye and then drawing something on your eyelid can be extremely daunting. Luckily, there are several different types of eyeliners in existence and you get to play around with all of them! So why risk poking at your precious peepers? Eyeliner makes your eyes look dramatically bold and defined. A strong black liner can pull together a whole makeup look and even looks good on its own without other products.

Here is a list of different eyeliner types ranging from easy to more difficult:

Pencil

Just starting out with eyeliner, try a pencil liner! Check out your local drugstore and find an eyeliner that says it is blendable or easy to smudge. This is important because if your eyeliner does not blend well, you cannot fix your mistakes while applying it. The beauty of a good blendable eyeliner is that you can apply it haphazardly and blend it out using a q-tip. This technique will leave you with a smoldering and smoky eye effect that is perfect for any night out.

Felt Tip

Want to elevate your look but you’re maybe still feeling nervous about your lining skills? Opt for a felt tip liquid eyeliner pen. This product is similar to a felt tip marker. It has a precise tip that allows for much needed control and the ink comes out dark and won’t budge all day. It is a great choice to use if you want to practice a cat eye.

Gel Pot

Try a gel or cream eyeliner to achieve the ultimate celebrity look. Gel eyeliner is usually sold in a small glass or plastic jar or pot and should be applied with an angled eyeliner brush. Pick up a little bit of the product with your brush and carefully draw a line as close to your lash line as possible. If you’re feeling cray cray, flick that brush out at the end of your eye to create a timeless cat-eye look. Pro tip: if your gel eyeliner is starting to dry out in the container over time, add a few drops of your favorite facial spray in the pot to revive the gel and you’re good to go!

Once you are feeling comfortable with the different types of eyeliners, try using different colors or even different mediums. You’d be surprised what product can double as an eyeliner: glitter, eyeshadow, rhinestones. Before I go, I'll leave you with this pearl of wisdom: if you ever feel immensely heartbroken after washing off the perfect winged eyeliner look at the end of the day, that means you’re doing it right.
